Educational Games and Simulations

Educational games and simulations use experience to increase learning. These games are powerful instructional tools during which participants experience a series of challenges that require significant thought and experimentation. They learn first hand by seeing the effects of their decisions and the results of their actions. This translates into “aha!” learning which remains with them for life.

THE MANUFACTURING SIMULATION GAME

Experience three weeks in the life of the Lightning Bolt company struggling to move from a push system of manufacturing to a pull system using all the concepts of total quality management and just in time operations. You perform the functions of planning and building products in competition with other teams striving for the highest level of customer service and the lowest level of inventory. Real world problems continually arise and challenge each team in a game environment that is painfully realistic.

THE MARKETING GAME

You are on the board of directors of a professional association or “not for profit” organization, trying to attract new members. With others on your board you research and develop a marketing plan that you believe will meet the needs of the local community. As plans are developed and programs executed each team is measured in terms of customer satisfaction points. The team with the highest number of customer satisfaction points wins.

THE INTEGRATED RESOURCE MANAGEMENT GAME

You are the head of a department in an organization struggling to solve a problem that challenges the very survival of the organization. The game concludes with a review of the general principles of integrated resource management that can be applied to any organization, demonstrating the need for an integrated approach to decision making and problem solving.
